War of Independence commemoration in Emly May 5, 2019

On Sunday May 5th, Emly Historical Society will host a special event to commemorate all those that died in the Emly area during the War of Independence 1919 – 1921.

2.30pm: The event will begin at 2.30pm in St Ailbe’s Parish Hall with a talk on the War of Independence by renowned historian Dr John Borgonovo entitled “Emly, the Golden Vale and Revolutionary Ireland” . Dr Borgonovo is a lecturer in the School of History at UCC and featured on the recent RTE 3 part documentary series The Irish Revolution.

4.00pm: The people will then take the short walk behind a bagpiper to the Emly Memorial Monument where a short prayer service will be held and a wreath will be laid to commemorate all those from the Emly area that died during the War of Independence.

4.30pm: Tea and refreshments will be served in Byrnes Tavern at the end of the event
